Aripiprazole aka Abilify is a 5HT2A antagonist and 5HT2C partial agonist which will help to disinhibit dopamine release and possibly help with depression/anxiety and sexual function amongst other things (might improve sleep as well). At low dosages its partial agonist activity at dopamine receptors will bring a overall net increase in dopaminergic activity. It also antagonizes H1, 5HT2B and 5HT7 receptors - which may or may not do something useful. Anyway low dosages of Abilify seem to be useful in many people with unipolar depression and anxiety disorders, likely in large because it helps to overall increase dopaminergic activity. Also unlike with stimulants where dopamine can get broken down by MAO and COM-T or get taken back up into a synapse/neuron and stop activating a dopamine receptor a dopamine agonist like Abilify will be much more constantly activating at the dopamine receptors it binds to around the clock

Then there is also the fact that unipolar - bipolar depression likely lies on a spectrum and that an antipsychotic like Abilify in a bit higher dosages(like 5-10 mg?) may be helpful to those who are somewhere inbetween being unipolar and bipolar or mildly bipolar/hidden bipolar

If someone is to take an antipsychotic for depression then aripiprazole/Abilify seems to be one of the better ones, it activates dopamine receptors as a partial dopamine agonist more than Rexulti and Vraylar(newer is not always better and aripiprazole is generic and cheaper). I do think some people with unipolar depression get prescribed too high dosages from the start though, like 5 mg. It is much more likely to start blocking dopamine at this dosage, for unipolar depression 1-2 mg might be better. Abilify is a really potent partial dopamine agonist, at 0.5 mg there is already 40% D2 occupancy! And at 2 mg there is over 70% D2/D3 occupancy. So it will quickly start blocking/reducing net dopamine activity in higher dosages and people might be having a lot better results with 1-2 mg than 5 mg. Seen a lot of people in this sub alone who have unipolar depression who get prescribed to take 5 mg right off the bat. That's probably just too much and might even be pro-depressive and anti-hedonic. The lowest dosed pills are at 2 mg but you can just split it in two

Tl;dr: Reasons to take Abilify for depression are are: It is a 5HT2 antagonist/partial agonist - which might reduce side-effects of SRIs and help with depression/anxiety/emotional blunting/sexual dysfunction and side-effects - and help to increase dopamine release. It is a partial agonist of dopamine receptors and in low dosages and when endogenous dopamine levels are low(which they often are in depression) it may help to increase overall net dopaminergic activity and further help with depressive symptoms. As a bonus it can probably help with migraines in those who have it, which many with depression do(I know it is only a few case reports but given Abilify's pharmacology ie 5HT2 antagonism + dopamine partial agonism-antagonism it would make sense)
